Archerr, the amount of personal space people feel they need is cultural (same with speaking volume), so you’re not being racist. In some countries, for e.g., people talking stand close enough for their breath to fall on each other– annoyed me no end when visiting Turkey. Farther away is considered cold and unfriendly. I used to have relatives (by now very quiet indeed) when I was a kid who would wind up all shouting at once talking at a family gathering. Very exhausting.
