  1. Wow! Great show with lots of discussion. I am glad Arthur got upset as I was as well. If all relationships are supposed to be open ones, that why are we fighting for gay marraige so much. Love is a commitment to someone else and takes work between two people. Regarding sex drive, mine is a bit more than the boyfriend but never been a problem. Of course, xtube is in my favorites. He!

  2. Thank you, Arthur! Regarding the conversation on open vs. monogamous relationships, I was finally glad to hear someone get a little angry over monogamy constantly being criticized by so many gay men. It seems that most of my friends are in open relationships, and I certainly don’t mind joking around, but they sometimes make us seem as if we are the odd ones. I have no problem with their choices, but they need to have respect for mine as well. And the argument that “oh, well, that’s nature” is so tiresome. Is mankind not able to rise above the biological imperative to spread our seed? I’m just glad to hear that we aren’t alone, although it seems Vera feels the same way as well. Thanks, Archer, for a great show and great, thought-provoking topic!

  3. Thank you, Dave—that clearly explained where you’re coming from. Naturally, I don’t agree with you on everything, but we do agree on some things.

For example, I don’t personally know anyone on the centre or near left who doesn’t value hard work and personal achievement (the far left is another matter). But you’re quite right that most of America doesn’t respect people on welfare. I’d add that many Americans actually despise people on welfare. But I strongly disagree with you about Americans’ attitudes and continue to assert that those harsh critics could never survive on welfare and that they DO feel people are getting some “advantage” they don’t get. I also think they shouldn’t be criticising the have-nots but rather the haves who’ve structured the entire American system to block middle class progress; the middle class ought to be looking at the people in their way, not the people behind them.

All welfare should be a hand up, not a hand out—I think you’d agree with that. But it serves no purpose to punish or disrespect people on welfare, and we ought to call out people who engage in that sort of behaviour (and I used to be one of them, so I know it’s possible to grow up and move on).

About healthcare, you said: “most Americans prefer a solution that is driven by private industry or private-government partnerships”. The second part is arguably true, but every poll shows that the vast majority of Americans do NOT want healthcare left entirely in the hands of the private sector, which has screwed things up so badly (and bought and paid for the Republican members of Congress and the Blue Dog Democrats along the way). The president’s healthcare proposal will give Americans freedom of choice: If they’re happy with their insurer, they don’t have to do anything. If they want it or can’t get insurance any other way, a public option will be there. Freedom of choice: How more American can you get?! Actually, I think that what will emerge will be a uniquely American solution.

I’m always amused when Americans talk about anything being “socialist”. The vast majority of Americans haven’t a clue what that word means (and wouldn’t know it if it came up and bit them on the bottom), but they use it anyway because they think it’s nasty. I think that’s funny.

As for the whole sex thing, I disagree with you and I think Anthony shows a way couples can move forward. But, then, I’m older, so maybe that’s why I can be so circumspect about it all.

  4. Wow a very good show minus the sound problems. I found the conversation very invigorating and wish I would have been there.

In terms of health care, when everyone is covered then it betters society as a whole. Right now the poor ARE getting free healthcare, the rich are getting EXCEPTIONAL healthcare and the middle class are paying for it all and getting nothing. This has to change.

I believe the fear is that everyday Americans understand (or believe) how lazy we can be (the right to be American includes the right to be lazy.) As such if something like Universal Healthcare is created more people will be abusing it than using it. To give an example some family members of mine would say something like this “You start giving free healthcare and you’re going to have to pay for every (n word) and mexican who has 5 babies and you can’t even force them to get their tubes tied! Why should I have to pay from some b-word who doesn’t want to follow the rules of God and have a bastard child nine months?” Yes that is pretty close to what I hear. The fear is that the poor will abuse the system.

I also know a lot of my libertarian friends believe Healthcare isn’t even a fundamental right and that no one should be given it to begin with. They also believe that we shouldn’t be taxed, and if we weren’t taxed then you could take that extra money and actually save up to afford the hospital costs.

Now in terms of sex lives, I will point out that after a year and half with my BF our sex life has gone from 5 times a week to about 2 or 3. At first this bothered me but he’s completely comfortable with me (and him) watching videos which is fine cause with busy schedule regular sex takes too long to get started and there is a ritual to the whole thing. The trade off is I’ve been demanding on being a top more often ;). Personally I don’t want an open relationship because just before we got back together I got one of those ‘I got HIV’ calls and it scared the sh*t out of me. Thankfully we’re fine but I’m done playing the field and then worrying after everything is said and done if I’ve contracting something from someone. Even trusted friends can sometimes get stuff and its just not worth the worrying and stress in my opinion and it never lives up to what you expect to be. The only open relationship I’ve seen work is my right hand the internet 🙂 My imagination can work just fine and is a lot less stress. I also would kill myself if anything I did in an open adventure ended up hurting him. You trade a little bit of your freedom for stability and security and to me at this stage of my life that is worth a lot more.

    Great show guys!

  5. Arthur I am not right – I am center but fiscally conservative, believe in the ability of the individual to succeed and small government. I didn’t think Bush was great, but I do think Obama is far worse. I like Hillary and she is the only one in the administration I like. I disagree on the polls – all of the polls show that “Job Approval” ratings are continuing to fall. As a matter of fact Bush had a higher job approval rating at the same time in his Presidency. Obama’s personal rating is still strong but will slide with the job approval. It is not the right that that is slipping they always disliked him and would not give him a favorable rating personally or related to job. It is the middle that is sliding.

When I say you guys are out of touch I am referring to the American belief system that seems to intrigue the left. American’s do not want a social welfare system that encourages reliance on the government. They want people to work hard and do for themselves, there is a lack of respect in America (generally) for those that are perceived to be reliant on government support. Food stamps and all of the assistance available is there to catch those on the bottom and is meant to be temporary so that individuals can get on their feet. If you want to better yourself and really want to change your life there are many free programs available such as mentoring, life skill coaching, job training etc. The system is not perfect but no system is. No one wants to see children without health care or elderly without care. However most Americans prefer a solution that is driven by private industry or private – government partnerships. Middle America does not want big government or any system that is perceived as socialist. They value hard work and individual achievement. It is not that they don’t want to pay for others or feel others are getting something they are not, it is that they want to see people work hard and better themselves. These are not my views they are ingrained in middle America.

As far as hating Obama – I cannot help it – I just don’t watch his press conferences, his coverage overseas or the news. I read the news on the Net and avoid all things Obama. I plan to take 6 months of in 2011/12 and work to get anyone but Obama elected. Just as I have heard people on this podcast joke about Cheney and hoping something impacts his health etc. That is exactly how I feel about Obama, hopefully all that smoking will help.

  6. Come off it, Dave! Just because you don’t agree with us doesn’t mean WE’RE full of BS or “removed from mainstream America”. Poll after poll after poll shows that Americans agree with Democrats—not Republicans—on public policy issues, so it’s not surprising that Republicans are now a third of all Americans—and shrinking. In the last elections, Democrats won the presidency AND both houses of Congress so, you know, that actually means—by definition—that we’re clearly WITH mainstream America. You DO know your side lost, right?

Sorry to hear you hate President Obama, which I personally find kind of peculiar. I never hated Bush (and still don’t), though I despised his policies. In fact, I didn’t even hate the real president, Dick Cheney (though, I admit, he DID push me awfully close to it). Hate is a wasted emotion, after all.

You rightwingers are always saying that people in the centre and left “don’t get it”, and that’s the one thing YOUR side doesn’t get: We completely “get it”, we’re just not fooled by rightwing rhetoric, mythmaking, lies and distortions. And some of us have no intention of letting the right wing get away with its games anymore.

  7. Wow lots of BS – could a group of people be more removed from mainstream America? You guys don’t get it. You will be lookin for Republican conspiracies everywhere….At least I do understand why you hated Bush, I have never hated a politicin before Obama and I really hate him….. As far as the partner goes if sex drives don’t match it is a problem as at least one partner is disastisfied. Need to try to work it and if all attemps and options fail, I would end relationship.
